Every so often, we at Birmingham Mitsubishi will receive an inquiry about the brand’s revered Lancer model. Though it was discontinued for U.S. markets in 2017, the legacy that this compact car left behind in the automotive industry is undeniable. Beloved for its sporty styling, everyday practicality, and various powertrain options, the Mitsubishi Lancer became an achievable answer to anyone craving reliable transportation with a bit of an edge. Initial Production Years

The Lancer’s cavalry-inspired nameplate dates back to as early as 1973, where it was introduced to European and Asian markets to satisfy the buyer looking for a model larger than the Minica but smaller than the Galant. After sprouting more trim levels and body styles, the Lancer received a dramatic refresh for its third generation in 1988. It shed its rounder design elements and replaced them with boxier stylistic touches, along with the introduction of stronger turbocharged engine options. Ultimately, these changes gave way to the production of the Lancer Evolution (Evo) in 1992, debuting with a 2.0L turbocharged powertrain and 4WD system. The Evolution received updates as the years went on in subsequent iterations dubbed Evo’s II, III, IV, V, and VI. Higher-tuned Ralliart versions of these models were used to win the World Rally Championship in 1996, 1997, 1988, and 1998.

Onward and Upward

Updates to the Lancer Evolution were constant, and by 1999, it was a globally recognized name thanks to its demonstrated performance attributes and proven results in the vehicle racing culture. It became so popular that, in 2003, the model became available in the United States to directly compete with other manufacturers' sporty sedans, coupes, and hatchbacks. Much to the joy of motorsports enthusiasts in Birmingham, the Lancer Evolution debuted with its coveted 2.0L turbocharged engine and an AWD system. Production ramped up from there, allowing many drivers who purchased this model from its launch to take its engaging driving dynamics out on many runs through US-31. As the years went on, so too did the Lancer Evo’s trim levels and add-ons. Throughout the 2000s, it gained performance enhancements, weight-saving iterations, and more robust manual transmissions.

Final Years

With the arrival of the Lancer Evolution X in 2008, the vehicle’s renowned turbo powertrain made up to 295 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. However, shifting market trends were beginning to sway the average buyer more towards SUVs. A direct result of this change was declining sales, which would ultimately lead to the final edition of the vehicle dubbed the Lancer Evolution FE in 2015. It was limited in production, models were individually numbered, and its horsepower ratings crossed the 300 threshold. So, if you ever manage to visit the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute spot one, know that you’ve truly seen something special. There are whisperings about the Lancer returning to Mitsubishi’s lineup in 2027 as an all-electric model, however.
